Matt Warren Lets Storytelling Soar on Soul-Stirring New EP Heartbreak Superstar

There’s a timeless art to country songwriting, the kind that trades flash for feeling and radio polish for raw truth. Matt Warren’s new five-song EP, Heartbreak Superstar, is a shining reminder of that. It’s not just a record; it’s a writer’s record, one that wears its heart, dust, and dreams proudly on its sleeve.

The title track, “Heartbreak Superstar,” cements this project as something special. Co-written with the incomparable James Slater, the song clocks in at just over four and a half minutes, and not one of them is wasted. Full of Muscle Shoals soul and aching tenderness, it feels like a silent love letter to “the one who was sent for you,” the kind that hits you slow and hard. Warren’s vocal delivery doesn’t just tell a story, it testifies to one.

The rest of the project is equally rich in texture and truth. “Long Story” (written with Skip Black and Nicole Witt) plays like an anthem for those who’ve taken the scenic route through life. “Dirt Road Runner,” co-written with Maggie Rose and Pat McLaughlin, pulses with energy, rootsy, free-spirited cut that feels like wind in your hair and mud on your boots. Then there’s “When My Baby Cries,” a collaboration with McLaughlin and Cliff Audretch, which showcases Warren’s gift for finding poetry in pain. Finally, “Faded Blue Jean Heart,” written with Jay Knowles and Oscar Charles, wraps it all up in a wistful melody that feels like Sunday morning coming down.

Heartbreak Superstar feels less like a product rollout and more like a carefully unspooled diary. Each song carries its own timestamp, a moment, a season, a snapshot, but together they form a complete picture of an artist who knows exactly who he is.

Matt Warren isn’t chasing trends here. He’s chasing truth and on Heartbreak Superstar, he catches it.
