Luke Combs Gets Candid About Fatherhood on Today's Country Radio With Kelleigh Bannen

Luke Combs may be one of country music’s biggest voices, but at home, he’s just Dad and his kids couldn’t care less about guitars, sold-out arenas, or the fact that he’s a two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year.

In a refreshingly honest and heartfelt conversation with Kelleigh Bannen on her Apple Music show Today's Country Radio, Combs peeled back the curtain on life with his two young sons, revealing a side of himself fans rarely get to see.

“They've got real personalities popping out,” Combs said with a grin, referencing his oldest Tex, who just turned three, and his youngest Beau, who’s turning two next month. “You can kind of figure out what they're about, but man, they just don’t care at all about music like, me playing guitar, they’re like... whatever. They got no idea.”

Despite his global success, Combs admitted his kids don’t exactly see him as a superstar. When he asked his oldest what Dad does for work, the response was adorably simple: “He sings.” That’s it. No awards, no tours, no hit records, just “he sings.”

“He knows what singing is, but he doesn’t know what that means,” Combs said. “He’s just incapable of comprehending it.”

That unawareness is something Combs treasures. He recounted a moment last year when his oldest son came to a soundcheck shortly after turning two. Even then, the concept of a performance was lost on him.

“I showed him that you can make noise in the mic and he thought that was the coolest thing in the world,” Combs laughed.

While his sons have yet to attend a full show, that moment may be coming soon. Combs hinted that his eldest might make his first concert appearance sometime in the next six months and even then, he’s not sure what to expect. “He’s never been [to a show] while he’s actually awake and the crowd is there,” Combs said. “I have no idea what he’s gonna think about that. He just has no idea. And not that he should. I kind of like that he doesn’t, to be honest.”

That sentiment, an artist embracing anonymity in his own home is perhaps what makes Combs’ music resonate so deeply with fans. He may be singing for millions, but the moments he’s cherishing most these days are the ones filled with sticky fingers, bedtime stories, and total, blissful cluelessness.

Eventually, the Combs boys will understand the magnitude of what Dad does. But for now? Luke is more than content being just another guy with a guitar his kids couldn’t care less about.
